The M65 motorway was proposed in the early 1970s but construction did not begin until 1980. During the building of the Motorway many buildings and entire streets disappeared in Clayton Le Moors. The M65 began construction in the early 1980s and opened to Blackburn in 1984. The Route was extended to join the M61 and M6 in 1997.
